My entry for day 28 of Equestria Daily's Artist Training Grounds II. The brief was "draw a pony moving on".
Today's theme was crying out for a Luna/Nightmare Moon piece. How does one move on from doing something regrettable? Here, a sister's forgiveness banishes the spectre of Nightmare Moon. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a "forgiveness" episode in the show itself (not necessarily between Celestia and Luna; fascinating as that could be, they're not really the focus of the stories).
One minor thought: when the unlit portion of the moon is visibly distinct from the rest of the sky, I believe that it is generally because that portion of the moon is brighter than the sky due to "earthshine." In the picture the opposite is true, with the unlit portion of the moon being darker than the surrounding sky.
Epic. I love this artwork and your idea. God! I love their mane!
Indeed, they are not main actress of the show and both of them are not typical (Disney type) princesses for saling toys (Celly is too motherly and queenly. Luna is too dark and she acts like a general). But I still like their stories.
